Thank you my friends

Thank you my friends for comforting me and giving me hope again. your comments and emails calm me a lot. It’s the hardest time I had in all my life. I have many things to think about, and my problem is that I think a lot and I want everything to run as scheduled. This is my main problem, I think a lot , sometimes I hope to be cool for a short period, but this is me. My husband always says, I can’t imagine you not thinking of a coming problem in your head.
Today my husband received his visa, and he will leave soon, I was so confused and I had mixed emotions. My mother in law cried as soon as she heard that he will leave soon, I cried with her and my husband tried to calm us.
Till now I can’t accept the idea of leaving for a long time, and I can’t stand it without my husband, I feel so weak without him, he gives me the power in everything.
About the generator, I can’t operate it, because I have to pull a long string very hard and fast and it’s too hard for me and I have a problem with my right shoulder because of it.
Anyway you will read many posts from me, when my husband is away, I will not have anything to do at the beginning till he will have his residency and start with my papers which is another problem I think about a lot, what if they do not allow me to enter Dubai?

I wonder what you want to know about me and my family? I will prepare a post to post it when I will leave Iraq.
Today we bought a few books, we have very few choices with books they are either political or religious ones. For me I don’t like any of them. But today we found a book shop in a second floor of a building without a show room, but it was great, it contains many good books and they have a catalogue of their books, I wonder how many people know about it? the prices of books are rather high in Iraq, that’s why very few people are reading books now. These books will help me to kill the time when I will sit alone. I’m not going to read them now.
PS. I will try to write some emails when I can, so please forgive me for not responding. I feel so glad when I read them.

Hi Rose,

It is hard. I know when I first moved to the United States, my mom tried to keep a straight face around me, but later I heard she cried the whole way home from the airport. But, you can take some comfort in the fact that Dubai is not that far away, and you may return to Iraq at some point if the situation allows it.

Another thing to look at is salaries in Dubai are probably higher than they are in Iraq right now. The cost of living is probably higher, but if you can be frugal and set aside some of the money you earn in Dubai, you may find it's worth a lot when/if you go back to Iraq. And, if you need to provide support for your parents, you will be better able to do that if you are earning more money.

Being separated from your husband is difficult, but it can actually strengthen your marriage if you can get through it. When you are together, it is easy to take each other for granted sometimes, but when you are separated for a period of time, you really realize what your spouse means to you. For me, I used to have a job where I was traveling every week - it was hard sometimes, but everytime I came back home from a business trip felt like Valentine's Day.

I wish you all the best of success in the changes you will be going through soon.

Shawn.

Making a move is always hard as it is filled with uncertainty. We have just moved out of our apartment into the home of my wifes parents. It has been somewhat difficult as we enjoy our privacy and like to do things our way. We are still adjusting however. It is good that your husband has a job, as neither of us have a job right now. I get unemployment benefits but they don't last forever. My wife is still finishing her college degree and so she can't work yet. Keep your chin up and look on sunny side of life!

I don't usually comment on bloggs but I felt that I should try to offer a couple of comforting words.

The change will make you and your family stronger.

You and your husband will succeed and your marriage and relationship will grow as a result of achieving goals together. My wife and I have immigrated to the other side of the earth to a place that we had never been to with only backpacks. That was 10 years ago. Now we own a house and have 2 children.

There are things about Iraq that you take for granted now and you don't realize it. You will only miss those things after you leave, giving you a deeper love for your home country.

Once you live and integrate in to a different society, you realize that it is easier than you thought and it actually makes life very interesting in a positive way. As long as you haven't closed your mind before you get there.

Your parents probably want a better life for your entire family and they may even be happier if you take good opportunities while they are there.

I could go on but you probably heard all of this before. I wish you luck. I wish Iraq luck. I am a 35 year old man who wishes with all of my heart that Iraqis find themselves better off in the years to come. I hope the actions that the United States took are percieved as actions of humanity and not for immoral motives. The majority of us just want the Iraqi people to be happy. It has cost us a lot in so many different ways, even as individuals. We have enough in America that we can give some away but I do hope that it is not wasted.

You take care of yourself and your girl. Keep up the posts. I bet if you ever needed help bad enough, even the people reading this blog would offer to help somehow. I see one person offering books. Keep your chin up and think positively. I bet your daughter has a good shot at having a very successful life in the future Iraq.

Rose-
I just found your blog via a link in a forum at http://debate.safe-democracy.org/debate/

It is so hard to hear any real information from Iraq, especially from or about women, that your blog is a major contribution. Thank you! and please don't stop!

I am so sorry to hear about the separation you face. I'm sure you've both made the best decision, but it is terribly hard. It's bad enough when life is not dangerous. I hate to think how awful it must be when you have enormous worries added to the sadness. I really, really, really hope everything works out for you.

I can't say it any better than it has already been said..we support you and care about you and your family-our Iraqi sisters and brothers...I am already contemplating how I can get our local lumber company to donate a new generator(with an electric starter !!!)they have always been kind when we have asked before(the last thing they did was supply fencing for a daycare center!) and how we could get it to you...and we would like to know what books you are interested in and what language you would prefer to read them in.You know , Rose, we have different governments (for better or for worse) different lifestyles and enviroments, but for the most-and largest part, we are all made sisters and brothers..simply because we,at one time or another and for various reasons, need one another. They have a tree here in Colorado-the Aspen...and scientists say that the Aspen groves-all the Aspen groves in Colorado, are enterconnected in a vast root system.and the Aspen also seems to thrive in ashes... the American Indians here many years ago resented the white(Cristian) man invading their Sacred Land and set fires to vast acres of lodgepole pine to chase the white men out(didn't work-they/we are still here)but what was amazing was that the Aspens thrived in the nutrient-rich ashes...let's take a note from nature....we have a huge chance(and responsibility )to help our fellow woman and man...
let us know what we can do to help...
